GISCC Meeting DCA - Web Accessibility

Posted in:
Wednesday, September 20, 2017 - 1:30pm - 3:30pm

WHERE: GA Department of Community Affairs 60 Executive Park S, Atlanta, GA 30329
WHEN: 1:30 PM - 3:30 PM
WHAT: Beyond don't put red and green together on a map.
Many GIS professionals are aware that people with color blindness have difficulty differentiating between red and green. If you want everyone to see the information on the map, then don't categorize features with red and green.  There are other visual impairments such as blindness that can make it difficult for people to understand location and information on a web map. Did you know that your maps and apps can be accessible even to the visually impaired?
Come learn about how Cobb County Georgia County made their web maps accessible to the public with visual impairments. Also we will hear from one of Georiga Technology Authority’s GeorgiaGov Interactive team is pioneering the way and providing support to governments on the journey to open information to all with digital accessibility.
As map makers, providers, and stewards of data and information it is important that data and information is accessible, legible, and accurate, and truly open to everyone.  Screen reader friendly web maps is a new concept, but fortunately we have local experts excited and open to sharing their story and knowledge in this area of accessible digital information.
